Tinta Roriz, also known as Aragonês in various regions of Portugal and Tempranillo in Spain, is one of the most versatile and appreciated red grape varieties in the world of Portuguese wine.
Its ability to adapt to different climates and terroirs, combined with a very distinct aromatic and flavour profile, makes it a popular choice among winemakers, being used for both still and fortified wines.
In this article, we'll tell you a little more about the history and characteristics of one of the Douro region's most popular grape varieties.
HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF TINTA RORIZ
It is believed that this grape variety originated in Spain, where it is widely known as Tempranillo. Because it is a type of grape that has a much shorter ripening time than other varieties, it was affectionately baptised there with the diminutive of the Spanish word “temprano”, which means “early”.
Over the years, the variety crossed borders and was adopted by Portuguese winemakers who found in it an extraordinary potential for producing rich, structured wines. Today it is one of the most important grape varieties in Portugal, where it coexists under two different names: Aragonês (mainly in the Alentejo area) and Tinta Roriz, the name by which it is better known in the north, in the Douro and Dão regions.
AROMATIC PROFILE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF TINTA RORIZ
With a bluish-black colour and thick skin, Tinta Roriz grapes produce wines with intense colours and striking tannins. In terms of aromas, the variety displays an impressive range that includes notes of red and black fruits such as cherry, strawberry, blackberry and plum, accompanied by nuances of spice. On the palate, it offers a good harmonisation between acidity and structure, resulting in full-bodied, elegant wines that, with ageing, are capable of developing additional layers of softer, more complex flavours.
Versatility is one of its great weapons. Tinta Roriz is a grape variety that is easily adaptable to different climates and soils, with the ability to express distinct personalities depending on where it is grown. Even so, hot, dry climates are its favourites, where it manages to deliver lower yields but more concentrated berries.
This profile allows it to be used in both varietal wines and blends. Combined with other grapes, it contributes body and complexity to the final result, and is a frequent companion to the Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca varieties in the Douro region. This famous triad usually produces quality Portuguese wines full of flavour and personality.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TINTA RORIZ IN PORT WINE
Tinta Roriz is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the Douro region, which is easy to understand given the crucial role this variety plays in Port wine production.
ured profile and the intensity of its aromas and flavours are characteristics that contribute to the balance and longevity of Port wines, giving them density and also some depth. For this reason, it is a regular presence in the blends used to produce this fortified wine, appearing as a complement to other traditional grape varieties.
The harmony between the sweetness and tannins of Tinta Roriz results in wines that can be enjoyed while still young, but which also have great ageing capacity.
